Legacy Systems Modernization: Rail Scheduling and Planning
Princeton is modernizing a Class I railroad’s car scheduling / trip planning system: replacing the legacy, decades-old applications with a containerized, micro-services, AI/analytics-enabled platform built on a modular architecture. The program is being delivered in 15 components to enable future functional upgrades, and each component will continue to operate with upstream and downstream legacy components while providing immediate benefits.

Legacy Systems Modernization: Yard Management
A Class 1 railroad yard management platform was initially rolled out in the late 90s to enable centralized yard operations by providing enterprise inventory management with real-time management of car and train movements. The system had become a hard-to-maintain, monolithic code base with a complex and dated architecture.
Princeton re-envisioned and developed a new-generation, modern platform which focuses on core yard management capabilities that support reimagined business processes taking advantage of the significant advances in technologies while non-core capabilities will be decoupled and provided outside of the application.
Legacy Application Modernization: Transforming the 2020 US Census
The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Decennial Census every 10 years as mandated by the Constitution. Princeton partnered with private sector and academic experts to modernize this critical government operation by applying advanced technological advancements, automation, and optimization techniques. The new system automated scheduling, workload assignments, and field data collection management, significantly improving efficiency, reducing operational costs, and enhancing overall system reliability.
Projected cost savings for taxpayers were $2.5 billion. The optimized assignment and routing, combined with the automation from the mobile devices, helped yield an estimated 70 percent increase in enumerator productivity.
The final results of the 2020 Census directly impacted every U.S. resident by determining the borders of legislative districts; assigning the number of congressional representatives for each state; and providing guidelines for the distribution of billions of dollars of federal funds every year.
