Legacy Application Modernization
Princeton employs a proven methodology to replatform legacy systems while reducing transformation risk. Unlike many firms, we rely on small, high-powered teams.

Legacy Application Modernization: Workforce Scheduling
At a national regulatory agency, leaders sought to transform scheduling and staffing for hundreds of professionals who perform different tiers and types of services for different industry categories.
The process had become a major pain point because it was highly manual and managed by several departments through a spreadsheet-based system.
Princeton built an optimization solution that supports the annual planning process, as well as the daily challenges of operational scheduling that entail new information and necessitate adjustments.

Legacy Application Modernization: Car Scheduling / Trip Planning
Princeton modernized a Class 1 railroad’s car scheduling / trip planning system. Princeton is replacing legacy, decades-old applications with a containerized, micro-services, AI/analytics enabled platform built on a modular architecture. The program is being delivered in 15 components to enable future functional upgrades, and each component will continue to operate with upstream and downstream legacy components while providing immediate benefits.
“Thoroughly impressed on the user’s ability to easily navigate the application with zero training or context. When the users are excited and the feedback is ‘when can we get more’, please take this as a MAJOR WIN for adoption!”

Legacy Application Modernization: Power Grid Optimization
An electric power grid operator had seen significant degradation in critical optimization models.
The models had been built years earlier by an outside vendor and the original modelers had retired or moved on. The operator’s leaders retained Princeton to conduct a model review because of its deep optimization expertise and familiarity with the solver software powering the models.
Princeton identified significant performance improvements that were made immediately, as well as multiple opportunities to improve long-term stability by updating the improvements to the formulation and code.

Legacy Application Modernization: Yard Management
A Class 1 railroad yard management platform was initially rolled out in the late 90s to enable centralized yard operations by providing enterprise inventory management with real-time management of car and train movements.
- This legacy system had become a hard-to-maintain, monolithic code base with a complex and dated architecture.
- Princeton re-envisioned and developed a new-generation, modern platform which focuses on core yard management capabilities that support reimagined business processes taking advantage of the significant advances in technologies while non-core capabilities will be decoupled and provided outside of the application.
